How to read this heat map

Each tile is one fund. The colour shows its return over the window you pick: green for a gain, red for a loss, and a deeper shade for a larger move. Grey means the fund moved less than the first band, or that Zensei has no price for that window. The legend above the map gives the bands for each window.

The tiles are the same size inside each group. Zensei does not weight them by fund assets or market value, so a small theme gets the same space as a large one. The 11 S&P 500 sectors get the largest tiles because together they make up the whole index. Other assets get the smallest tiles. Hover over a tile, or tap it once on a phone, to see its return over every window.

The "vs S&P 500 (1M)" view colours each fund by its one-month spread: its return minus the S&P 500's return over the same month. A green tile in this view beat the index, even when its own return was negative. For the full picture over two windows, the sector rotation chart plots every sector by its short and long spread. The quadrant column in the table comes from that chart.

A heat map shows recent returns, which is a measurement, not a forecast. To compare valuations, see sector P/E ratios. To see how many stocks take part in a move, see market breadth.

Sector heat map: common questions

Which S&P 500 sector is strongest today?

As of 12 October 2026, Technology (XLK) is the strongest of the 11 S&P 500 sectors, ranked by one-month return (+4.7%). Financials (XLF) is the weakest (−3.5%). Over one week, Consumer Staples (XLP) leads with +4.1%. The ranking uses daily closes, so it changes after each trading day.

What do the colours on the sector heat map mean?

Green tiles rose over the selected window and red tiles fell. A deeper shade means a larger move. In the 1-month view, the shade gets deeper at moves of 1%, 3%, 6% and 10%; grey tiles moved less than 1%. In the "vs S&P 500" view, green means the fund beat the S&P 500 over one month and red means it trailed. All tiles in a group are the same size: Zensei does not size them by fund assets.

How often does the sector heat map update?

The heat map updates once per trading day, after the US close. It uses daily closing prices, not intraday prices. The current figures use closes up to 12 October 2026.

Which funds does the heat map cover?

It covers 115 funds in three groups: the 11 S&P 500 sector funds, the industry and theme funds, and other assets (commodities, bonds, the US dollar and volatility). Each tile links to that fund's page.
