What is a golden cross?

A golden cross is the day a stock's 50-day simple moving average of closing prices moves above its 200-day simple moving average. The 50-day average follows about ten weeks of prices. The 200-day average follows about ten months. After a golden cross, the recent trend is stronger than the long trend.

What is a death cross?

A death cross is the opposite move: the 50-day average moves below the 200-day average. After a death cross, the recent trend is weaker than the long trend. The name sounds dramatic, but it describes past prices only. It does not tell what the price does next.

Golden cross vs death cross

Both are the same measurement in opposite directions. A golden cross puts the 50-day average above the 200-day average; a death cross puts it below. Both averages use past closes, so a cross comes weeks after the price turn. When a price moves sideways, a stock can have a golden cross and a death cross a few weeks apart.

How Zensei computes it

Zensei takes the S&P 500 constituents from the holdings of the 11 sector funds (XLK, XLF, XLV and the others). For each stock, it computes the 50-day and 200-day simple averages of the daily adjusted closes. The cross date is the first close on which the 50-day average is on the new side. Zensei loads about 320 trading days of closes, so a cross is visible only when it happened in the last 120 trading days. A stock without a close on the latest date is left out. These are measurements, not signals to act on.
